When people ask me about beefing up their work wardrobe and how to do so, I always begin the conversation with a discussion about staples. I'm a firm believer that your closet should be 80/20: mostly classic, investment pieces with some fun seasonal pieces that you don't feel guilty about getting rid of after the trend has passed. Much like the 'Field of Dreams', if you build it, they will come. Or more relevantly speaking, build a good closet foundation and the rest will follow. Also, a rule of thumb I use is looking at my higher price point purchases with a dual lens: will I be able to wear it outside of work?
The 80%:
sleek pencil skirt
who doesn't like a good No. 2
classic blazer
I love either a tweed or a boyfriend blazer

blouse with character
who can say no to a good polka dot?!?!

adore JCrew's guaze and featherweight variety

What are your closet staples, work or otherwise?

Such good advice. I'm transitioning from a 'business casual' work environment to a super casual one and I am SO excited that my work clothes budget just turned 'clothes I really love to wear' budget.
ReplyDeleteI do a lot of events for work, so a LBD is a total must-have. Love your other suggestions!
