I've thought long and hard about how to appropriately express my sorrow for the events that took place in Connecticut on Friday.  The truth of the matter is, it has been hard for me to watch, read, or even think about the horrific events that transpired, let alone put anything into a post about it.  There are simply no words. When the news broke on Friday, I had a familiar feeling of a knot in my stomach that I had on April 16, 2007.  It's the feeling of a heartbreak that is so deep and inexplicable that it takes your breath away. And it's a feeling that I would never wish upon anyone.

What I will say is that, as with everyone else, my heart aches for the families, friends, and community that has lost loved ones and been exposed to this tragedy.  It's easy to talk about what-if scenarios and the coulda-woulda-shouldas and political agendas, but instead of all of that I hope that you take time to send your love, thoughts, and prayers to the people who have been affected by this tragedy; that you hold your loved ones a little closer; and that you treat every day as the gift that it is.  Take time to remember the beautiful children who lost their lives to this senseless act and the acts of bravery and selflessness from the teachers and school administrators.

And if you have some time, send a note of support to our neighbors in Newtown and keep them coming.  Once the dust clears and the media's attention has left, that's when Newtown will need it the most.

  1. What a beautiful post Chelsea. I love that you included an address for folks to send letters of support. I have several students who are pulling together projects and letters to send to Connecticut. This tragedy has touched so many lives - both young and old.
