Lessons from my Grandmother

6/14/2012

Many of my fondest childhood memories include spending time at my grandparent's house over the summer.  This always meant playing in my grandmother's jewelry box, trying on her lipsticks, and smelling her perfume.  I realize that I am lucky to have had the opportunity to spend such quality time with my grandmother and as I look back at those times I spent with her, I've come to understand that she knows a thing or two about fashion and being perennially chic.

Boucle is always in fashion
Who isn't inspired by the fashion icon that is Jackie O? The Chanel suits? The pillbox hats? Those lovely, large sunnies? But back to the suits, boucle is always classic, always in style, and always gorgeous.

Brooches add the right amount of sparkle to any outfit.
I used to thing brooches were the way of dinosaurs, but how could you not appreciate a well-placed, beautiful brooch.  It transforms the everyday into the extraordinary.

Find a signature scent and stick to it
I love mixing my perfume routine up, but I always have a signature scent that I go back to over and over again.  One that I know will always be produced and is less trendy and more classic.

Dress for every occasion and take pride in your appearance
I am just as guilty as anyone else of walking out of my house in the suburban tuxedo (read yoga pants and tshirt), but I think that simply getting ready for the day, putting together an outfit, and putting on some heels really changes your perspective on the day.

Embrace who you are
Maybe after eighty-some-odd-years, my grandmother has come to the wise realization that trying to be anyone but yourself is just exhausting.  And yourself...well you are pretty fabulous if you ask me.
