#unplug

7/18/2013

I most recently read an article in Fast Company in which Baratunde Thurston unplugged from everything for 25 days.  It seems insane in this day and age that any person could withstand the temptations of the constant flow of information and interactions for 25 whole days.  Needless to say, I was hooked on this idea as I find that myself, like many of us, are all-too-hooked on tweeting, liking, pinning, checking-in, friending, instagramming, and the like.  It's easy to let the onslaught of constant status updates and reminders get you in a haze and less present in your own real life.  I'm not sure if I can go so far as Baratunde...maybe I'll try it out over the holidays as he did, but this weekend, I'm going to try my own experiment in unplugging.  I'm going to put down the iPhone that seems permanently attached to me and simply unplug.  I'm hoping that it will be an exercise in not only my own will and fortitude, but also an opportunity for me to re-charge my batteries.  You folks who have been following me know that we have had some big changes in our lives recently that we are still in the middle of and I am hoping this will be a good chance to refocus myself.

I'm curious to know who of you have tried this experiment before.  How long did it last? What were your experiences?

  1. I haven't felt the need to unplug yet. I try to keep things fairly balanced. On the weekends, I don't break out my lap top until nap time and sometimes I forget where I've left my cell phone in the house!

  2. I like the idea of unplugging. I try to do it on the weekends....but it definitely would be interesting to do it for a long amount of time. I think we would realize afterwards that we actually didn't miss it as much as we thought we would.
