Bump it up - Week in Outfits

11/14/2011

It's the only time I feel like me, she said, & everyone else just thinks it's dress-up.
-Brian Andreas Story People

This past week I was informed by a coworker (whom I don't know AT ALL) that it was OK to look like I was pregnant and this was a conversation that she had had with another coworker (also someone who I do not know).  I can't figure out whether or not it is a compliment that that women who I don't know are discussing my dressing habits.  I'll stick to being flattered for now.  As I was vexing about the situation, my good friend put it to me like this: To them it appears as if I haven't missed a beat with regards to my fashion.  However, little do they know, I am FREAKING out on the inside.

As I've alluded to several times before, dressing for maternity is, well, interesting.  Maternity designs (for the most part) are bleak and every day I fight a battle that involves me talking myself out of putting on yoga pants and slumming it into work.  I've been lucky that my weight gain has been minimal (and on par with what the doctor recommends) and so I've been able to maximize my non-maternity clothing for a bit longer and also wear non-maternity clothing that happens to work with my growing bump.

What I've learned so far in maternity dressing:

  • Invest in a nice pair of jeans: Yes, it's painful to shell out over $100 for a pair of jeans that you won't wear after you have the baby, but they fit SO MUCH BETTER than other brands and the Bella Bands (although handy) I only found comfortable for so long.
  • Ruches are your friend: Regular clothing that is ruched gives you a little extra room to grow while giving you a silhouette rather than dressing like a tent
  • Embrace the bump: Wearing form fitting clothing gives you some shape and helps you look less huge. Trust me, you don't want to look larger than what you really are.
  • Wear Heels (especially if you are short): I really try to wear heels at least 4 days out of the week.  It's been a little easier for me because I've always worn heels, but honestly, it makes you look a little less dumpy (esp. if you are of the shorter set).  I've also been lucky because I've had very little issues with swelling to date. Unfortunately this up-coming week may be difficult, as I think I might have given myself a stress fracture (awesome).
  • Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize: I try to wear pretty minimalistic items, but then snazz it up a bit with chunky jewelry, great earrings, or fantastic shoes, scarves, or tights.

So maybe it's not so super bleak- as long as a I can continue to wear some of my regular clothing a teensy bit longer.....

  6. You're lookin' good:) I find it depressing that women think you have to "give up" on dressing well once pregnant or with children. I'm going to try not to cave!! I commend you on still wearing heels, my back is having none of it:(
